Dry needling for Myofascial Trigger Points

Dry needling for Myofascial Trigger Points

Dry Needling is the western philosophy behind Acupuncture. It is differentiated from Acupuncture by its philosophy on ‘how it works’.

Dry Needling works differently from Acupuncture by targeting the Myofascial Trigger Points in the body that become tight and restricted through overuse syndromes, sporting injuries or even sedentary lifestyles.

Dry Needling involves the insertion of a fine filament needle into specific sites to ‘de-activate’ active trigger points within the muscle and fascia (the tissue surrounding the muscle). ‘Active’ myofascial trigger points often produce pain within the body and by de-activating these points, your therapist can restore the normal functioning of the muscle and tissue to help decrease pain and improve movement. Interestingly, myofascial trigger points can be visually confirmed and detected by using an ultrasound imaging technique called ‘sonoelastography’.

Dry needling can be an effective way of treating pain associated with acute injury as well as chronic pain including neuromuscular dysfunction. During the dry needling session, most subjects won’t even feel the thin needle penetrate the skin, and there is often no pain when inserted into a long, healthy muscle. When the dry needle finds the active myofascial trigger point, the muscle will react by ‘twitching’ and often reproduces ‘your’ pain. The muscle will then release, and you may feel instantly relieved.

Dry needling is a sterile and safe treatment method performed by qualified practitioners. YHD practitoners currently qualified in dry neddling are Emma Gillingham (Physiotherapist) and Claire Shield (Physiotherapist)
