Poor Posture and its effects

Claire Shield Senior Physiotherapist & Clinical Pilates Specialist

Numbness in your fingers? Sore Shoulders? Stiff Neck? You may not think these conditions have anything in common. However, prolonged poor posture can result in any of these conditions. Many desk workers suffer from these symptoms and it can be a result of “Upper Cross Syndrome” which is where the upper body is being pulled forward from working at a desk all day.

Over time if not addressed, muscles in the chest, front of the neck and upper back become tight from being over worked by sitting in a poor position. At the same time the deep neck muscles that hold your head back and shoulder stabilizer muscles that draw the shoulders back become weak from lack of use.

Upper Cross Syndrome

The best way to improve your symptoms is to change your work habits by retraining your posture. Our qualified Physiotherapists at Your Health Domain will run through an assessment and show you how to modify your posture as well as provide you with exercises to strengthen the weakened muscles. Your exercise program will be tailored to suit your needs whether that be gym-based, Pilates based, or a home exercise program. In the meantime to relieve the pain try to move on a regular basis, every hour for 5-10min.  Incorporating regular stretching is also beneficial.

Finding it hard to make time? We have 15 Clinical Pilates classes at set times Monday – Friday. The classes are 45 minutes of strengthening and stretching designed to improve posture and prevent injury.
